Scholarship Club to Salute Grads June 5

sydneydavisMay 20, 2021 (Lawnside, N.J.) — The Lawnside Scholarship Club will honor local high school students Saturday, June 5 at 6 p.m. during a virtual Salute to Graduating Seniors via Zoom and Facebook Live in collaboration with the NAACP Camden County East Youth Council. This is the second year the program will be presented virtually.

Graduating seniors who live in Lawnside will be recognized for their academic, artistic and athletic accomplishments in a special program highlighting encouraging words from a previous scholarship recipient who has weathered the pandemic. Sydney Davis, the 2018 top scholarship recipient will graduate from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, in 2022 after spending her entire junior year taking online courses from home. Mistress of ceremonies, language arts teacher Chantel Washington is the Lawnside Public School Teacher of the Year for 2018-2019, the last time a teacher was selected.

The Club has awarded scholarships since 1945 to support local students pursuing higher education and technical training. This year’s theme is “Rise Up Through Education.”

“We are grateful to the Youth Council for providing the technology for the second consecutive year to make the 2021 Salute to Seniors a community event,” said Sharon Whitaker, president of the Club. “We value the organizations and individuals who join us in honoring these graduates and their families.”
